The Teenage Counselling Process at Kids First Sydney
We strive to make the journey to better mental health clear and supportive for your family:
1. Initial Consultation
This first step often involves a discussion with parents/guardians and/or the teenager to understand concerns, gather background information, and determine the best path forward.
2. Assessment (if needed)
For some teens, a more formal assessment (e.g., for ADHD, learning difficulties, cognitive abilities) may be recommended to clarify diagnoses and guide treatment. Kids First offers a range of assessments.
3. Tailored Therapy Sessions
Regular one-on-one sessions with the teenage psychologist will focus on the agreed goals, using age-appropriate and evidence-based techniques.
4. Parent/Guardian Involvement
We believe in a collaborative approach. Parents are regularly updated (with the teen's consent where appropriate for confidentiality) and provided with strategies to support their child at home.
5. Review and Progress
We periodically review progress with the teenager and family to ensure therapy remains effective and to adjust goals as needed.

See What Our Amazing Community has to Say…
Everyone is really lovely. We often go in for a session with one therapist then bump into another in the hallway. They always stop to chat and have a quick check in. That really helps to build the bond between them and my child. The reception team are also great and are super responsive to any request.
Our family has been treated exceptionally well in an understanding and caring way. Their words and actions have always been in the best interest of our son and our family.
Care and kindness just oozes out of Kids First. We have seen many therapists over the years, but the genuine interest in our family, as well as the knowledge and skill of the team has been life-changing for our child.
We like the compassionate and caring way the Team treats our son and how comfortable they make him feel. What they have done has helped considerably and have created a great connection with him.
The assessments were amazing and very thorough and showed us a roadmap that made it very easy to understand and follow, and we were supported along the way for not just for my son but myself as well .

How do I know if my teenager needs to see a psychologist in Sydney?
If you’ve noticed persistent changes in their mood, behaviour, sleep, or social interactions, or if they’re struggling to cope with stress, academic pressures, or difficult life events, a teenage psychologist can provide valuable support. Trust your gut instinct; it’s always best to seek professional advice if you’re concerned.
What's the difference between a counsellor and a psychologist for teens at Kids First?
At Kids First, our teenage psychology services are delivered by university-educated psychologists who are members of professional bodies like The Australian Psychological Society. Psychologists have extensive training in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions and can conduct psychological assessments. While counselling is a component of what they do, their qualifications often allow for a broader scope of practice.
How long does therapy for teenagers typically last?
The duration of teen therapy in Sydney varies depending on the individual’s needs and the complexity of the issues being addressed. Some teens may see improvements in a few months, while others may benefit from longer-term support. This will be discussed during the initial consultation and reviewed regularly.
Is teenage therapy confidential?
Yes, confidentiality is a cornerstone of therapy. For teenagers, the specifics of what is discussed in sessions are generally kept private between the teen and their psychologist, with exceptions for safety concerns (if there’s a risk of harm to themselves or others). We work collaboratively with families to ensure parents are informed and involved appropriately, respecting the teen’s privacy.
Can I use Medicare for teenage psychology sessions at Kids First?
Yes, many of our families claim rebates from Medicare for psychology services at Kids First. With a Mental Health Care Plan (which can be part of a Chronic Disease Management Plan, Team Care Arrangement, or GP Management Plan) from your GP or paediatrician, you can access Medicare rebates for a specified number of sessions with our Sydney teenage psychologists. Please chat with your doctor about your child’s needs.
Can I use my child's NDIS funding for teenage psychology services at Kids First?
Yes. If your child has a self-managed or plan-managed NDIS funding plan, you are welcome to use it for eligible psychology services at Kids First. Our child psychologists have extensive experience supporting children and teenagers who have NDIS plans. The supports your child is eligible for will be indicated on their NDIS Plan. Kids First does not offer services to children whose NDIS plan is directly managed by the National Disability Insurance Agency.
