New Graduate Speech Pathologist

Join Kids First for a Speech Pathologist Career – Not just a Year!

Welcome to Kids First Children’s Services! We’re excited to invite dedicated newly graduated or early-career Speech Pathologists to join our supportive multi-disciplinary team. Our Stronger Together program is not just a one-year stepping-stone; it’s a pathway to a rewarding, long-term career in paediatric allied health.

Stronger Together: Your Career Journey

Stronger Together is Kids First Children’s Services’ three-year program for emerging clinicians that focuses on ‘best practice practice’.

Your Kids First colleagues (Speech Pathologists, OTs, Child Psychologists and Early Intervention Teachers) have a wealth of knowledge to share, and we’ve created a structured professional development program that will ensure that you benefit from all that they have to teach you as you enter the world of paediatric allied health.

Start with us as a ‘full-of-potential’ new career clinician and, in a structured and supportive environment, develop your professional skills as you become a confident and competent clinical mentor.

You’ll not only make a meaningful contribution to the lives of children and families, but you’ll also build your experience and abilities so that you’re fully equipped to have the career you’ve always wanted.

Year 1: Clinical Foundations

At Kids First, we focus on nurturing your early clinical skills and knowledge so that you have a great foundation from which to launch your career.

As a New Career Clinician, we’ll invest significantly in you, both as a person and as a practitioner.

Your Year 1 Stronger Together schedule will be curated so that you have the time and opportunity you need to transition to your new role. We’ll provide you with professional development opportunities to help your personal and professional growth, and we’ll also give you the supported chance to try new things.

Your Kids First colleagues will also invest in you. They all, sincerely, want you to succeed, and know what it is like to start at the beginning. You will find that they are generous with their time, expertise, support, and advice.

In your first year at Kids First, not only will we help you to gain the competence you’ll need to be a successful therapist, but we’ll also support your understanding of the ‘other’ (and sometimes invisible) skills you’ll need to be a professional clinician, such as how to build trusting relationships with clients and colleagues.

  • Capped caseload so that you have the time and space you need to learn and grow in your new role.
  • Weekly mentoring from a dedicated clinical mentor who will guide and support you.
  • Opportunities to observe your multi-disciplinary colleagues in action so that you can learn and grow as a clinician.
  • The chance to explore different intervention models so that you can experience service delivery in a variety of settings, such as preschools, schools and small groups.

Professional Development

  • Enjoy the benefits of our weekly Speech Pathology Team Hubs where you can refine your clinical practice and reasoning skills.
  • Take advantage of your generous personal Professional Development budget to pursue training that will further develop your knowledge and skills.
  • Get maximum value from our fortnightly Case Conferences where the multi-disciplinary mentors around you will exponentially expand your perspective and clinical horizons.

Activate your Intervention Skills

  • You’ve done paediatric placements and you’ve worked with children before, but in your first year at Kids First you’ll get the opportunity to really focus on your clients.
  • As you use your clinical reasoning to formulate and develop evidence-based intervention plans, your Kids First mentor and the rest of our team will support and guide you.
  • Among many other things, you’ll learn how to successfully conduct an initial appointment, assess children’s skills using a variety of tools and measures, and how to be innovative and creative so that kids love coming to see you.

Build Professional Partnerships

  • Working in paediatrics gives us the unique opportunity to equip and empower a child’s support network so that children and their families can achieve their goals.
  • In addition to your Kids First colleagues, you’ll be supported as you build positive, helpful professional relationships with your clients’ parents/carers, educators, medical and allied health professionals so that you can be part of a ‘whole child’ approach to your client’s care.

Year 2: Clinical Confidence

Your second year as an Emerging Clinician at Kids First is all about helping you to develop clinical confidence.

You’ll be ready to step into your ‘next chapter’ of professional growth so that you can consolidate your skills, continue to learn, and move forward with clarity and confidence.

With your first year of practice under your belt, you will have developed an understanding our clients, your colleagues and our community. You’ll no doubt have fantastic ideas that you feel confident to share and be working collaboratively with a wide range of multi-disciplinary colleagues.

Your career will remain on its upwards trajectory as you continue to benefit from our Stronger Together program.

PD opportunities, the support of our generous team and your broadening clinical scope will make for exciting and rewarding career development.

Year 3: Clinical Contributor

Year 3: Clinical Contributor

Your third Stronger Together year at Kids First is an enriching one where you will step into the role of a Clinical Contributor. Not only continue to build on your career skills, but also get the chance to contribute to the professional development of others.
