24 ways to help your child stay regulated

As your children grow, they learn ways to cope with the sights, sounds, smells, touches and tastes that they are exposed to in the world around them. Childhood also exposes kids to new feelings and experiences. Some of these are exciting and fun, others are worrying and unpredictable.

If your child is particularly sensitive to their environment, he or she could be one of the thousands of children who are described as being ‘sensory defensive’.

Does this sound like your child?

Perhaps your child gets easily ‘revved’ up or frequently becomes emotionally upset, finding it hard to calm down again.  Your child may be an extremely fussy child who dislikes certain textures, tastes or sounds. Or perhaps your child is constantly ‘on the go’ and doesn’t seem to be able to sit still.

If any of these descriptions sound like your child, Kids First’s experienced Occupational Therapists have compiled this list of proven therapy ideas that you can put into place at home or even in the classroom.

They are easy, cheap and (best of all) effective. We hope they help!
